Competent Roofer – Building & Roofing Regulations
We are proud to be verified members of the Competent-Roofer self-certification scheme.
Competent-Roofer is the only 3rd party accredited, Government Authorised, roofing-specific competent personal scheme, allowing contractors, such as us, to self-certify their roof refurbishment work.
It is important to note that complying with building regulations is law and we, as a verified member of Competent-Roofer, are able to self-certify major roofing installations.
The scheme encompasses all roofing types for domestic, industrial and commercial properties within England and Wales.
If 50% or more of your roof needs to be replaced, then under the Building Regulations, you must upgrade your installation to the current minimum standard and your Local Authority needs to be notified a minimum of 48 hours before work commences.
Failure to comply could result in an enforcement notice from your Local Authority, and you will face difficulties when you decide to sell your property.
The scheme does not apply to smaller roof repairs or new work.

How We Became Members of Competant Roofer
To become a verified member of Competent Roofer we passed all the necessary requirements which included:
- Pass of financial checks
- Passed a desktop audit with relevant paperwork.
- Offer customers a 10 year workmanship guarantee, a 14 day cooling off period and have the minimum insurance cover in-place.
- Successfully complete a rigorous site inspection.
- Compliance of the relevant Standards, Health & Safety requirements, and Building Regulations.
When Do We Self-Certify Work Under the Competent-Roofer Scheme?
- When 50% of the roof is being refurbished
- Slating and Tiling and all other pitched works (including Shingles and Shakes)
- Felt, Single Ply and GRP
- Fully supported lead, copper, zinc and standing-seam aluminium
- Liquid Applied Waterproofing
- Mastic Asphalt (incl. Hot Melt)
- Reinforced Bitumen Membranes
- Provision of roof lights- provided they are only inserted between rafters/joists where the existing structure is NOT altered
The Scheme Does Not Cover:
- If less than 50% of the roof is being replaced
- Work on trussed rafters
- Any structural glazed roof e.g atriums
- Any solar or photovoltaic installation
- New build work
- If works fall into any of the above it falls under the remit of LABC
- Structural work, unless like-for-like, e.g. rafters
